About Japan Wanderlust
Japan is one of the most visited countries in the world, yet most travelers only see the surface of it.
We think the best of Japan shows up when you slow down and explore with someone local: the neighborhoods, the food, the small details of daily life that rarely make it into a guidebook.
Japan Wanderlust is a locally based network of guides and travel specialists running private, personalized trips across Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Mount Fuji. No big group buses, no fixed schedules, no rushed sightseeing. Every experience is built around your interests, your pace, and how you like to travel.
First trip to Japan, traveling with kids, deep into anime and gaming, hunting for the food spots locals actually eat at, or planning a custom multi-day route? The goal is the same: to help you experience Japan in a way that feels personal, comfortable, and worth remembering.
Who We Are
Some experiences are hosted personally by our founder. Others are led by local guides we’ve chosen carefully because they work the way we do: small groups, honest recommendations, flexible pacing, and real local knowledge.
This isn’t mass tourism. It’s thoughtful travel for people who want more than a checklist of famous places. We help you understand where you’re going, why it matters, and how to enjoy Japan with more confidence.
One thing worth knowing up front: we’re guides and trip planners, not a booking agency. We design your days and show you around in person. Hotels and reservations stay in your hands, but we’re always happy to point you toward the right neighborhood to stay in, the restaurants worth your time, and how to avoid the tourist traps. Think of us as the local friend who plans the good stuff, not the desk that books your flights.
Founded in Japan, Built Around Local Experience
Japan Wanderlust was founded by Kazu Nakazawa, a Japan-based guide and travel planner. It started as a way to help travelers get past the usual tourist checklist, and grew into a network of guides and specialists who share that same instinct for honest recommendations and travel connected to local life.
The focus hasn’t changed: private tours and custom trips designed around each traveler.
What We Believe
Not everyone wants a packed itinerary or a tour bus. Some people want quiet neighborhoods, a good local restaurant, a hidden spot, an easier pace for the kids, or just the reassurance of exploring with someone who knows both the culture and the practical side of getting around. That’s who we build for.
Our Approach
The best way to see Japan isn’t only the landmarks. It’s the local perspective on them.
A lot of our experiences use Japan’s trains and subways, so you move through Tokyo or Osaka the way residents do. We might wander the back alleys of Shinjuku, track down a neighborhood spot in Asakusa, dig into the pop culture districts of Akihabara and Ikebukuro, or build a relaxed day with plenty of stops for kids.
Nothing comes from a template. One traveler wants a slow cultural day; another wants photography spots, car culture, nature, history, or help navigating the country with young children. We build the trip around the people taking it.
Why Travelers Choose Japan Wanderlust
People come to us when they want a more personal way to see Japan. Usually they’re looking for private guided experiences, custom itineraries, real local recommendations, family-friendly pacing, and flexible routes instead of a fixed schedule. Often they just want help making sense of the trains and neighborhoods.
Japan is safe, beautiful, and remarkably well organized. It can also be confusing the first time. Train systems, the language gap, restaurant etiquette, crowded tourist areas, seasonal timing: all of it can make travel feel harder than it should. Our job is to make it easier, calmer, and a lot more enjoyable.
Built Around Trust and Local Experience
Everything we recommend comes from people who actually live, travel, and guide here, plus years of conversations with travelers from all over the world.
We keep adjusting our routes and recommendations as things change: the seasons, local events, crowd levels, transport updates, and what families and past guests tell us they need. That’s what keeps our trips practical and genuinely useful for visiting Japan right now.
Explore Japan Beyond the Tourist Checklist
First trip or fifth, there’s always another side of Japan to find. From the energy of Shibuya and the old streets of Kyoto to quiet neighborhoods, hidden food spots, and easy custom day trips, we’ll help you build memories that feel real, relaxed, and entirely your own.
Welcome to Japan Wanderlust.
